Description: The Acting Internship on the GIM Service at Inova Fairfax Hospital provides an excellent opportunity for the student to assume a high level of responsibility for patient care. Each Acting Intern will develop a strong working relationship with a junior or senior resident, as well as a designated teaching attending. This Acting Internship provides an opportunity to work with many different sub-specialties within the field of Internal Medicine. While at FFX, the student will attend conferences and rounds with the team. They will also participate in multidisciplinary rounds on their patients. There are daily noon conferences covering a wide range of topics. There is a separate daily morning report for students where acting interns learn to present and discuss cases. The hands-on patient care experience is virtually the same as that of a regular intern, carrying a patient load averaging 5-10 patients. The Acting Intern is an integral part of the medicine team at FFX, thus you can expect to be on call every fourth day which includes some weekend days, but does not include overnight call. The AI is especially focused for those who are getting ready for a transitional or preliminary year in Medicine. Absences for interviewing, etc. will only be permitted under unusual circumstances and must be approved prior to the start of the rotation.

Description: The Intensive Care Units at Inova Fairfax Hospital are extraordinarily busy with a high level of acuity. FFX is a major referral center for the critically ill patients in Northern Virginia. There are three ICUs which are covered by a large ICU team comprised of 2 residents and 3 interns in addition to rotating fourth year students. The types of cases seen are vast and encompass a range of ages and demographics. There is an emphasis on pathophysiology which involves a multidisciplinary approach. Students are given a high level of responsibility and are expected to work closely with their residents and attendings to manage their patients. There is a critical care attending who round daily with the ICU team. Students are expected to pre-round and present their patients then. There are ample opportunities to learn central line and arterial lines. Students are also expected to attend a number of critical care conferences designed specifically for the ICU team.
