Obstetrics & Gynecology Acting Internship: OBGN-446

Description: The Acting Internship in Ob/Gyn at Washington Hospital Center will consist of 2 weeks of Labor and Delivery Service and 2 weeks of Gynecology Service.

Labor and Delivery Service: The student will function as an intern under direct supervision of the resident and attending staff. Responsibilities will include: assist with post-partum rounds, evaluation of post-partum fever and bleeding, triage laboring patients, performance of normal vaginal deliveries, assist in cesarean deliveries, and help teach third year medical students. Students will be expected to present patients at sign out rounds and attend the department educational conferences. During this part of the rotation, the student will learn: to perform a thorough history and physical of laboring patients; learn to evaluate the normal and abnormal stages and phases of labor, including the interpretation of fetal heart tracings; learn to perform normal deliveries; learn to counsel post-partum patients about contraception and breastfeeding; begin to learn the steps of a cesarean section and the evaluation of post-partum complications such as fever and bleeding.

Gynecology: During the gynecology rotation, the student will act as a gynecology intern under direct supervision of residents and attending physicians. Responsibilities will include helping with morning rounds, assisting in major and minor cases. At times, the student will carry the consult beeper and will perform in-patient and emergency room gynecology consults under supervision of a resident and attending. The student will be expected to present patients to the attending physician rounder of the week and attend all department educational conferences. During this portion of the rotation, the student will learn: to perform a thorough history and physical on gynecology patients; evaluate patients in the emergency room for first trimester bleeding, pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, and other concerns for which gynecology is consulted; evaluate for post-operative complications such as fever, bleeding, gastrointestinal dysfunction, respiratory distress, and urinary symptoms; assist with minor and gynecologic surgeries; learn when surgery is appropriate; and learn the anatomy of the pelvis, the steps of a hysterectomy and the principles of good surgical technique.

Description: This elective is a four week elective strictly geared towards those students who are interested in women's health in the outpatient setting. Frequent important issues addressed during this rotation are the primary care of women, osteoporosis, gynecological health, and menopause. The student works closely with Dr. Singer to establish a feasible and effective working schedule to effectively achieve the goals of the elective. Visiting students must submit a copy of USMLE Step 1 score of 200 or higher to VSAS when applying.

 


 
Acting Internship: Maternal-Fetal Medicine: OBGN-515

Description: The student rotating through this acting internship will serve as a junior house officer on the maternal fetal medicine service. The student will work under the direct supervision of senior ob/gyn residents and the maternal fetal medicine faculty. The student will help manage the pregnant patient with medical complications. In addition, the acting intern will acquire experience in screening/diagnostic ultrasound, antenatal testing and prenatal diagnosis. The student will take call with senior residents on the service. Visiting students must submit a copy of USMLE Step 1 score of 200 or higher to VSAS when applying.

 


 

Pelvic Surgery/Urogynecology: OBGN-516

Description: This is a four week elective in pelvic surgery and urogynecolgy. The student will be responsible for seeing and evaluating patients in the incontinence center under the guidance of Dr. Luis Sanz. The student will be learn the basic work up of the female with incontinence and learn the essentials of urodynamic testing. In addition, the student will be responsible for covering operative cases performed by Dr. Sanz. These cases will focus on prolapse and incontinence procedures, advanced laparoscopic techniques and major open abdominal and pelvic robotic surgeries. Visiting students must submit a copy of USMLE Step 1 score of 200 or higher to VSAS when applying.

 


 
Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility: OBGN-519

Description: Students will work with several of the division’s physicians but will spend most of their time with Drs. Esposito and/ or Widra. The practice offices are in Frederick, MD, Rockville, MD and Washington, DC. Students will need their own transportation to these sites. Time will be spent with the practice physicians seeing patients with Infertility and other Reproductive Endocrinological problems. Students will participate in or observe infertility procedures, surgeries and educational activities. Visiting students must submit a copy of USMLE Step 1 score of 200 or higher to VSAS when applying.

Description: The Prenatal Diagnostic Ultrasound Center (PDUC) third floor Gorman. The elective time will be spent with the MFM Division's attendings and sonographers who perform imaging studies on obstetric and gynecological patients. The student will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical problems. The principles of diagnosis and management will be discussed in detail. Visiting students must submit a copy of USMLE Step 1 score of 200 or higher to VSAS when applying.
