Georgetown University School of Medicine's 6th annual IronMed Charity Triathlon & 10K Run is set to take place on the morning of Saturday April 8th, 2006. On this day, athletes will tackle a 1000 yard swim in Yates pool, 15 mile mountain bike on the C&O Canal Towpath, and (or only) 10 kilometer run on the Capital Crescent Trail. You could be one of them. There's no experience necessary! Love to swim, bike, or run but not all of the above? That's ok - find two friends and participate as a team.
The 2006 IronMed Charity Triathlon is going to benefit MetroTeenAIDS in an effort to support the fight against HIV/AIDS in the youth of Washington, DC. MetroTeenAIDS is a local nonprofit organization that works to prevent the spread of this deadly disease through outreach and education, as well as to identify, treat and improve the lives of those who are already infected. Last year's event raised over $10,000 for Lombardi Cancer Center's Art Therapy Program for children with cancer. With such a worthy cause we are fundraising for again this year, we definitely hope for this year's event to surpass last year's total.
Do you have what it takes to compete in the Georgetown University School of Medicine's 6th annual IronMed Charity Triathlon & 10K? We think you do. Here's what to do:
1) Attend an informational meeting! There will be two optional informational meetings for those interested in finding out about the logistics of the event, learning more about MetroTeenAIDS, and to help you decide that YOU CAN DO IT! These meetings will both be on Tuesday January 24th in GA2-4 in the Preclinical Science Building, the first at noon and the second at 7:00 p.m.
2) Register ASAP!
3) Begin fundraising! There is a

Of course, you can always raise more! In fact, there will be prizes for top fundraisers. We have included on the website a letter that you can give to your sponsors to help solicit donations. Please be sure to sign the letter and fill in your name and address at the bottom before sending it out so your sponsors can mail you their donations. We've also included a spreadsheet on which to record sponsors and donations.
4) Train! Blow the dust off that speedo! Hop on the bike! Lace up those Nikes! You can check out http://triathletemag.com under Tips/Training for training information. The best tip we can give is to have fun! There will be a stylish t-shirt, goodie bag, and glory waiting for you at the finish line. Most importantly, you will be helping a great cause!
5) Check out the links on the IronMed website below. Here you will find the waiver required for registration, all the materials you need to start your fundraising, as well as a more detailed information sheet about this year's charity, MetroTeenAIDS. Please give it a quick read - it'll inspire you to get out there and race!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at ironmedtriathlon@hotmail.com. As we get closer to race day, you'll be hearing more from us about race logistics. Until then train hard!
