Dual Degree Programs
Georgetown University School of Medicine sponsors dual degree programs providing exceptionally talented students with the opportunity to earn both a medical degree and a master's or doctorate.
M.D./Ph.D.
The M.D./Ph.D. program is designed for students who are interested in a career conducting medically-related research. In general, students in the program spend the first two years in medical school, with research rotations over the summer. Years 3-6 of the program are generally spent performing Ph.D. research in one of many laboratories on the Georgetown campus under the auspices of one of many availably graduate programs. Particular strengths of the Georgetown M.D./Ph.D. program include cancer research (Tumor Biology Training Program), neuroscience (Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience), and Bioethics. After completing their thesis research and successfully defneding their thesis, students return the medical school to complete two years of clinical rotations.
Application
Application to the M.D./Ph.D. program requires ONLY an application to Georgetown medical school; a separate application to graduate school is NOT required. Similarly, the GRE is not required except for the those candidates interested in completing their doctoral thesis in bioethics. There are no specific GPA or MCAT score cutoffs used for admission to the M.D./Ph.D. program. Students matriculating in the program enter as undifferentiated graduate students, and make a choice about their graduate program sometime during their first three years of study.
Apply as an M.D./Ph.D. candidate via the AMCAS system. This will require two extra essays at this initial step. When you receive the secondary application, make sure to denote that you are an M.D./Ph.D. applicant.
Financial Aid
In 2011/12, all students admitted to the M.D./Ph.D. program were offered 50% tuition remission for the medical school years of their studies. Students admitted in 2012/13 admissions cycle will receive a similar offer. Students also receive a stipend to perform a research rotation between the first and second year of medical school. During the graduate school years (generally years 3-6), students receive complete tuition remission as well the standard graduate school stipend (currently $28,000/year).
