Description:  The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery offers a four-week acting internship to the fourth year medical students.  Students spend the majority of their time at Georgetown University Hospital , however, they will also rotate through the Washington Hospital Center . The rotation provides the student with a broad exposure to both the clinical and surgical aspects of the specialty.  Students see patients in the clinic with the attending staff and residents and gain experience in performing complete head and neck examinations, otoscopic examinations of the ears, and direct or indirect examinations of the nose, nasopharynx, oral cavity, hypopharynx, larynx and neck.  Skills necessary to take a thorough medical history are developed and emphasized.  Exposure to outpatients is also emphasized so that students will gain a facility in the diagnosis and management of the more commonly presenting problems in otolaryngology.  Students will also have the opportunity to observe surgical cases in the operating rooms as well as minor procedures in the outpatient surgery setting and in the clinic.  Students take part in inpatient rounds and under direct faculty and resident supervision share in the responsibility of caring for hospitalized patients. First call responsibility for patients, with adequate supervision, is required. Students are expected to have a patient load camparable to the PGY 1 resident on service. Textbooks and journal articles are suggested and made available to the students as they are needed.  Each student is asked to prepare an in-depth presentation on a topic in the field of Otolaryngology.

Pediatric Otolaryngology: 4315-502

Description: The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery offers an elective that concentrates exposure in the field of pediatric otolaryngology.  With three full-time faculty members with expertise in the field of pediatrics, we are able to offer a broad range of the experience and opportunity to the elective student.  Participation in the out-patient setting will be available.  In addition, the student will be able to participate in surgery and with the care of hospitalized patients.  Outpatient facilities are available at Georgetown University Hospital as well as the integrated satellite network in Maryland .  At the conclusion of the elective, the student will be responsible for a short 15-30 minute presentation on a topic in pediatric otolaryngology of his or her choice.  This presentation will be to the other students and residents, as well as faculty members.

Description: This elective is designed for third or fourth year medical students with an interest in the surgical subspecialty of Otolaryngology. Students who complete this two-week rotation will experience both an education in the subspecialty of Otolaryngology and the opportunity to learn about the culture of .

Over the course of two weeks students will have the opportunity to attend surgery and outpatient clinics and learn about Otology, Laryngology, Head and Neck, and Rhinology. Lectures will be given on various topics in the field of Otolaryngology by clinical staff as well as residents from the Honduran ENT program.

Dr. Richard Wagner, Otolaryngologist, will accompany the students during their elective in . The ability to speak Spanish is helpful but not required.

Students must: be in either their third or fourth year at Georgetown, have passed Step 1 of the national board exams, and be seeking a challenge and have interest in a cultural experience that will have a significant impact on their professional careers.
