Description: The rotation is designed to give the student a complete understanding of the transplant patient.  The student will be given the opportunity to work with the doctor in the Transplant Clinic, providing the student with information about the therapy of a patient after a transplant.  This includes all aspects of the patient, both anatomical and physiological.  The student will acquire working knowledge of metabolic processes through active participation with the transplant team in preservation of transplantable organs.  There will be some instruction in the immunological testing of transplant patients.  The student will be introduced to the principles of aseptic techniques and operative and non-operative care of the surgical patient.  He will have the chance to participate in and observe surgery (e.g., kidney and liver transplant, multi-organ procurement, vascular assess procedures and hepatobiliary Surgery etc.).  Research is being done by members of the transplant team, which provides the opportunity for student participation under faculty supervision.  The entire program stresses the scientific approach to problem solving in general, and specifically, as it applies to endstage liver and renal disease.
