400 Yard Swim in Yates Pool
12 Mile Bike on Capital Crescent Trail
5k Run on C&O Tow Path

The Ironmed Charity Triathlon is a sprint distance triathlon. The order of events is: swim (400 yard), bike (12 mile), run (5k). The course begins at Yates pool. Each transition area and the finish line will be clearly marked near the Yates parking lot and Observatory. The bike and run segments are out-and-back.  From the transition area, competitors make their way to the University’s Canal Road Entrance. Heading west along Canal Road and using the pedistrian tunnel, competitors will head northwest on the Capital Crescent Trail (bike) or the C&O Tow Path (run), before the turn around points.

The IronMed 5k Run course follows the run segment of the triathlon.

Race Day Schedule

All triathlon competitors should report to the staging area at Yates Feild House parking lot at least 30 minutes before thier assigned heat start time.

Heats, starting at the Yates pool, will begin at 7:00 a.m. The Triathlon is the only event that will have heats. The pool can fit 16 triathletes at a time. Volunteers will help serve as lap counters for triathletes.

In the hope of increasing the number of female athletes, this year the Triathlon will again feature the option of competing in a Women’s Only heats, which will start after the last men’s heat.

The IronMed 5k Run will begin at 9:00am. For safety, we would like the course to be clear from cyclists before runners in the 5k event start. It will be a mass start, with the Start/Finish line in front of Yate Field House.

Weather Considerations

Safety is the highest priority for us with the IronMed Triathlon and 5K. Because most of this event takes place outside, it is subject to the weather.  Should inclement weather arise, we will have people examine the course and may issue a delay if reasonable. However, if the course is deemed unsafe for participants, the race will be cancelled. Unfortunately, since this event is in coordination with the Georgetown School of Medicine calendar, the event will NOT be rescheduled. NO REFUNDS will be issued as your registration fee is considered a donation to the Hoya Clinic and counted towards your fundraising total. Thank you for your understanding.

Race Support

Competitors will have access to the Yates locker rooms and bathroom facilities. Access is through the pool; not the main enterance.

On course support includes volunteers directing athletes for each race segment. Water will be availible at the transition zones

Post-race refreshments will also be availible for athletes and volunteers.

Special Safety Considerations — Bike helmets are MANDATORY. Participants will not be let out of the transition area until helmet is secured and must remain on your head until your bike is racked again at the end of the bike segment. Those found without helmets will be disqualified. Be advised of bike course conditions when riding. Paths are maintained by National Park Services. There will be volunteers to help you on the course for when to turn around. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Timing

Each segment of the Triathlon will be timed and recorded for a total race time. Race numbers (body marking for the swim) must be clearly visible at all times throughout the race. Bib numbers must be secured to shirt for both bike and run portions before you leave transition area. Split times for race segments will only be recorded if bib numbers are visible throughout the entire event. Bib numbers and T-shirts will be distributed the day prior and race day. See event details for times.

Results & Awards

Results will be made availible as soon as possible following the event. This year we will be offering prizes to the top two finishers in the male and female individual triathlon, the top team of triathletes, as well as top male and female 5K runners.
