Reporting Time and Place: Georgetown students will receive instructions via email from the Clerkship Administrator in the Office of Surgical Education and do not need to check in.

Duration: Four Weeks

Max Students: Two students/ block

Description: An intensive four-week course in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit with both practical and theoretical basis for critical care in a surgical intensive care unit setting. Fundamentals of Ventilator support, interventional cardiac monitoring, etc. will be reviewed during this elective. In-house call will be every third night and it will be synchronized with the two surgical residents taking every-other-night call while on the critical care rotation.

 


 

Surgical Intensive Care Unit: SURG-452

Reporting Time and Place: Report to GME Office on 6th Floor, then 4B42 at 8am

Duration: Four Weeks

Max Students: Two students/ block

Description: This elective rotation is an introduction to the management of the medical and surgical problems of acutely ill surgical patients, including cases involving trauma, neurosurgery, cardiovascular-thoracic, abdominal, and other surgical subspecialties. This is an excellent rotation for students interested in medicine or surgery. Over 200 patients per month are treated for vital organ dysfunction. Students will participate with attendings, fellows, and residents in patient evaluation, presentation, and management, including intensive care procedures. Night call is approximately every fourth evening. Additional critical care faculty of surgical and internal medicine backgrounds include Drs. Herr, DiPhillips, Sample, Hockstein, Lee, Wang and Sava.

 


 

Surgical Critical Care: SURG-453

Duration: Four Weeks

Max Students: 1-2 students/block

Description: The students will rotate on the SICU (Surgery Intensive Care Unit) Service. They will have the responsibility for the management of patients on the surgical ward, the Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) commensurate with their experience and the severity of the patient's illness.
