Description: The MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center near downtown Washington, DC. The trauma service consists of full-time trauma/critical care surgeons, three teams of surgery residents, and medical students. MedSTAR is the trauma admission and resuscitation unit with its own helicopter and transport system. The National Rehabilitation Hospital is also located next door, linked with a skywalk to the main hospital. We have an excellent mix of blunt and penetrating Trauma (70%/30%). Besides the busy clinical services and in addition to the daily attending teaching rounds, there are weekly teaching conferences in Trauma and ICU. This affords an excellent opportunity in learning to care for the injured patient comprehensively.

Description: The Inova Regional Trauma Center, based at Inova Fairfax Hospital, is Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 trauma center for both adults and children. “Level 1,” the highest level awarded to a trauma center, is given only to centers that can provide the highest level of specialty expertise, as well as meet or exceed national standards. The Inova Regional Trauma Center was the first, and until last year the only, trauma center in Virginia verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 trauma center. With more than 3,500 trauma patients treated annually from Fairfax and surrounding counties and states, our team of trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, specialty surgeons and nurses is available around-the-clock, 365 days a year to treat life-threatening injuries including car crashes, falls, industrial incidents, and gunshot wounds. Burn patients are stabilized and then transferred to a burn center. Besides the busy clinical services and in addition to the daily attending teaching rounds, there are weekly teaching conferences in Trauma and ICU. This affords an excellent opportunity in learning to care for the injured patient comprehensively.
