1. Diagnostic Decision Making:
The student will formulate a differential diagnosis using history and physical exam data, develop a prioritized problem list, and select appropriate diagnostic tests for each patient encountered on the rotation.
2. Case Presentation:
The student shall record an initial history and physical exam and present it on rounds, prepare follow-up notes with pertinent clinical information and consultant recommendations, and move toward the goal of generating a differential diagnosis and diagnostic/therapeutic plan for each patient.
3. History and Physical Examination:
The student shall take a medical history and perform a physical exam on each assigned patient, compile an admission workup (to include labs, X-rays, etc.), and perform a daily evaluation (history, exam) for each assigned patient.
4. Communication and Relationships with Patients and Colleagues:
The student shall establish and maintain professional rapport with patients and colleagues at all times, recognize psychosocial issues, provide patient-centered care, educate patients, and demonstrate sensitivity to racial and cultural diversity. The student will be able to communicate verbally, in writing, and by electronic media as appropriate.
5. Test Interpretation:
The student shall learn to interpret clinical tests (complete blood count, blood smear, chemistry panels, ECG, chest x-ray, urinalysis, pulmonary function tests, body fluid cell counts) and understand and demonstrate proper use of sensitivity, specificity, and pre-test probability during rounds.
6. Therapeutic Decision Making:
The student shall offer treatment options, including assessing risks, benefits, and costs of treatment options, involving patients in decision-making, selecting drugs from within classes, and designing basic treatment programs and using critical pathways when appropriate.
7. Bioethics of Care:
The student shall learn the clinical use of advance directives and informed consent.
8. Self-directed Learning:
The student shall identify key information sources, perform literature searches, manage information and be able to report findings to the team.
