I, Too, Am Georgetown Medicine 2018

I, Too, Am Georgetown Medicine is a reflective, community building event open to all students, faculty and staff at the Georgetown School of Medicine. The theme of the second annual event on Wednesday, April 4th, 2018 is: “Finding Meaning in Medicine” with Keynote Address by Dhruv Khullar, M.D., M.P.P of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, followed by small group breakout discussions for medical student participants. All members of the GUMC community are warmly invited to join us for the Keynote Address.

This work will give us an opportunity to flex our empathy muscles as we engage collectively to better understand and support ourselves, each other, and the diverse patient populations we serve. In light of recent bias and hate events that have taken place on campus last year as well as divisive events across the country that continue to occur, the event also speaks to the need for expanding our understanding and empathy of others in order to build a safe, more inclusive and welcoming environment.

Schedule:

5:00 – 5:30pm Keynote Speaker: Dr. Dhruv Khullar presents “Meaning in Medicine — Purpose, Patients, and Policy” in lecture hall GA 2/4 of the Pre-clinical Sciences Building.

5:35 – 7:00pm Breakout Sessions: medical students are invited to partake in small group discussion and reflection led by Peer Dialogue Facilitators in the GE and GF corridors of the ILC. Attendees may RSVP for one of the following topics:

  • Session A: Who Am I & What’s My Place?  Location: Learning Society GF 1 & GF 3 — A discussion on identity in medicine and the health professions and each person’s place at the table (Topic designed for students, faculty, staff). The discussion will explore fitting in and standing out — Is there room at the table? Discuss a time when you felt there was room and was not?
  • Session B: Outside In/Inside Out – Intersectionality Location: Learning Society GF 5 & GF 7 — A reflection on how we assimilate major societal events with our daily work in the classroom/hospital while also living fully within these two very different contexts.
  • Session C: Fear and Resilience in Medicine Location: Learning Society GF 9-GE 10 — Defining “Fear Setting”: How to identify personal fears, focus on coping mechanisms, and learn to let go of the things we can’t control.
  • Session D: What does it mean to wear a white coat? Location: Learning Society GE 8-GE 6 — Topic designed for students, faculty. This discussion will focus on identities as a doctor, how to talk to patients and peers that have similar or different perspectives, and how personal identity blends with professional identity.

7:00 – 8:00pm Networking Reception: Come together for community building across classes and meet new colleagues, staff and faculty at the Epicurean social hour. Food and drink provided as supplies last.

All participants will:

  • Delve deeper into issues of class, race, religion, sexual orientation, geography, and privilege and how these give rise to the varied experiences we have as individuals at Georgetown School of Medicine, and in the world at large.
  • Engage in dialogue and activities about diversity and our experiences, where students, faculty and staff can speak freely, educate each other and learn from one another.
  • Learn about tools and avenues to further the discussion and enact change to better our community.
  • Come together for community building across classes and meet new colleagues, staff, faculty and meet up at a social hour at Epicurean at 7:00 with food and drink. Our hope is that this event will be the beginning of a meaningful discussion that will continue on for years to come!
