Longitudinal Well-being Survey & Research

Purpose: 

To better understand the well-being and non-cognitive skill development of Georgetown medical students, and implement a vehicle for assessing curricular and learning environment interventions.

Survey Administration:

This survey tool is administered to Georgetown University School of Medicine students at the following time points (first administered in August of 2017):

  • Beginning of first year (prior to classes starting)
  • End of first year
  • Beginning of second year
  • End of second year/beginning of third year
  • End of third year/beginning of fourth year
  • End of fourth year

Definitions:

  • Non-cognitive Skills – The attitudes, behaviors, and strategies that contribute to success and resiliency.
  • Well-being – A good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity (Dictionary.com).
  • Resiliency – the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress (American Psychological Association).
  • Burnout – Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and sense of low personal accomplishment (Dyrbye et al, 2008).
  • Stress – a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances (Oxford Dictionary).
  • Mindfulness – the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis (Merriam Webster Dictionary).
  • Empathy – The ability to identify with or understand the perspective, experiences, or motivations of another individual and to comprehend and share another individual’s emotional state (American Heritage Dictionary).
